Tray columns are used for making contact between a gas phase and a liquid phase so as to bring them as close as possible to the equilibrium state. Tray columns are widely used in various types of mass transfer operations. All the simulation results, which predict a certain number of theoretical stages, can be converted to actual trays depending upon tray efficiency for a particular service. In any conventional tray vapor rises through the liquid pool on the tray deck and then disengages from the liquid in the space above the deck. Liquid enters the tray from a downcomer above and leaves via a downcomer below.
Key Features & Functionality
Movable Valves: The valvestypically round or rectangularsit over perforations in the tray deck. As vapor pressure increases, it lifts the valves to create an opening for vapor-liquid contact.
Automatic Adjustment: The opening area of the tray automatically adapts to the vapor flow rate. At low vapor rates, the valves sit lower to prevent "weeping" (liquid falling through the holes), while at high rates, they lift fully to minimize "entrainment" (liquid being carried upward by vapor).
High Turndown Ratio: They offer a superior turndown ratio compared to sieve trays, meaning they maintain efficiency even when the column is operating well below its maximum design capacity.
Material Construction: Most industrial trays are made from corrosion-resistant materials such as stainless steel (SS304, SS316), carbon steel, or specialty alloys like Titanium and Hastelloy
